Caring Effective Help

Post Traumatic Stress is an anxiety disorder resulting from a traumatic experience in the past. When a person has a traumatic experience, detailed information of what was going on when the traumatic experience occurred, is filed away in the emotional memory in their unconscious mind. There is a small structure in our brain, known as the amygdala, that has access to our emotional memories and learned responses. Its function is to match new circumstances to what is already in the store and to alert us to possible danger by firing off the fight or flight response. When a person has had a traumatic experience and then they find themselves in a similar situation afterwards, the amygdala fires off the ‘fight or flight’ and the anxiety feelings and emotions are stirred up again, although there may not be any danger on this occassion. This is an unconscious process that can occur until the emotions are fully dealt with. For example, if someone had an upsetting experience in the past, of arriving home to find that the house had been burgled, the same anxious feelings might get stirred up again every time that they arrived home. Or reading or hearing about another burglary could cause the same reaction. There may even be other things relating to the event that they are unaware of, that are triggering off emotional reactions. This happens because the amygdala has stored away detailed information, including trivial details including sounds and smells.

Post-traumatic Stress Treatment

At Solution Focused Therapy Dublin we can give you effective help to easily alleviate the effects of trauma. Therapy is based on up-to-date scientific knowledge of how the emotional systems in the brain work and this is combined with extensive experience of utilising hypnosis to work with unconscious processes. This therapy has an important role to play in overcoming post-traumatic stress reactions and also the effects on your self-esteem and self-confidence etc; because it can help you to not only alleviate the symptoms of this anxiety disorder, but also get lasting relief by dealing with the factors that may be sustaining it. We start off by teaching you techniques to relax and calm down the symptoms, which ultimately become eliminated. We then use effective techniques to break the pattern of unconscious processes that are sustaining the trauma reactions, and eliminate them. We can help you to feel comfortable in previously uncomfortable or feared situations. Although we are dealing with emotions, the therapy techniques are non-intrusive and people usually feel relaxed at the end of each session.
